Alpha Delta Kappa began its journey in 1947, under the guidance of our four Founders, Agnus Shipman Robertson, Hattie Poppino, Marie Neal, and Marion Southall. Their main goal was to recognize outstanding women in the field of education. Another goal that they had was to promote education and charitable projects and activities and to sponsor scholarships.

The Kansas Alpha Delta Kappa sisters have continued the Founders' vision by establishing education scholarships at some of our state universities. This journey was begun in 1996 under the guidance of State President, Fran Wisner. Fran's State Altruistic Chairman, Lyla Hoyland, wanted to honor our state President, Fran, by establishing an Alpha Delta Kappa Education Scholarship at the University of Kansas which was Fran's alma mater.

The Kansas Alpha Delta Kappa sisters worked together to endow this scholarship at KU. The basic requirements established for this scholarship were:
  1. The student needed to be working toward one of three degrees: a Bachelor of Science of Education, a Bachelor of Science of Education, or a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
  2. The student needed to have graduated from any Kansas high school.
  3. The student needed to be in the Senior Class Standing.
  4. The student needed to be a female.
  5. The student needed to be pursuing a teaching career.

The Kansas sisters of Alpha Delta Kappa worked toward endowing this first scholarship during the State Presidencies of Fran Wisner (1996-1998), Vera Spencer (1998-2000), and Sherryl Longhofer (2000-2002). After completing the endowment at KU, the sisters decided they would like to continue the tradition at other state universities. This has become the Kansas State Altruistic Project for the subsequent presidencies.

Darlene Hadsall was the next State President (2002-2004) to begin working on establishing another state scholarship. She selected her alma mater, Emporia State University, to be the second university where Kansas Alpha Delta Kappa would establish an education scholarship. Work on this endowment concluded in the first year of Joann Hook's presidency.

During the second year of her biennium, State President Joann Hook (2004-2006) began the process of establishing an Alpha Delta Kappa Education Scholarship at her alma mater, Pittsburg State University. This work continued through the presidency of Joyce Perkins (2006-2008).

State President, Nancy Warren (2008-2010) oversaw the completion of the endowment of the scholarship at Pittsburg State University. Once this was completed, she established the Alpha Delta Kappa Education Scholarship at Fort Hays State University.

During the presidency of Nancy Thompson (2010-2012) the Kansas Alpha Delta sisters achieved the endowment for Fort Hays State University's Alpha Delta Kappa Education Scholarship. Then during Nancy's State Convention in 2012, she announced that the Kansas Alpha Delta Kappa sisters would begin working to establish a scholarship at Kansas State University.

Because K-State wanted all of the money before establishing the scholarship, President Nancy Thompson set up an account with the Alpha Delta Kappa International Foundation to hold the monies until the $25,000 was raised. Kansas Alpha Delta Kappa sisters have been working in this through the presidencies of Del Jo Broadrick (2012-2014), Nancy Medina (2014-2016), and Nancy Warren (2016-2018). During Nancy Warren's second presidency, biennium 2016-2018 a scholarship was established at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas with an endowment of $25,000.

Once the KState endowment was completed, we started our 6th endowment for Wichita State University.  As of May 1, 2020 we have collected $12,,627 for this endowment.

Kansas Alpha Delta Kappa sisters can be proud that in the past 24 years we have raised over  $80,000 to endow scholarships at five universities. The state of Kansas is the only state in the nation that has done this. Approximately 70 years ago, our Founders lit the torch to honor women educators. Kansas Alpha Delta Kappa sisters have taken this light to our universities. Let's journey on and continue to light the lamp of Alpha Delta Kappa throughout Kansas.
